POSITION TITLE: MECHANICAL DESIGNER
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting directly to the Mechanical Design Supervisor, this position will work as part of a team to design mechanical systems. Will provide support to all phases of projects from initial design through manufacturing, commissioning and field support.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform mechanical design tasks to achieve project design goals while meeting schedule and resource requirements provided by project manager/engineer
- Responsible for integration of mechanical subsystems within scope of overall project, and relay progress to project manager/engineer
- Provide technical support and resolution of mechanical assembly and function problems during fabrication/machining, initial assembly and factory acceptance testing
- Work with electrical designers to develop electrical enclosures
- Evaluate mechanical design proposals and manufacturing drawings for sound mechanical design practice and conformance with project goals and make recommendations as asked
- Communicate with project managers and engineering staff to ensure all customer specifications are met
- Ensure compliance with specifications, tolerances and safety factors when completing mechanical design tasks
- International travel to support assigned projects as required
- Provide project management support as required
- Perform other related duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology discipline or an acceptable equivalent in education and experience
- Experience in design and integration of mechanical drive systems and related structures for cable handling systems is an asset
- Experience in design of structures for aerospace or defence application is an asset
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency with 3D solid modeling using SolidWorks 2006
- Practical knowledge of AutoCAD and Microsoft Office products
- Ability to create, read and interpret engineering drawings
- Knowledge of structural fabrications, sheet metal construction and machining practices is an asset
- Ability to recognize and resolve problems as they arise while considering deadlines and resources
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to establish and maintain effective relations with co-workers and clients
